Toshiba Satellite S855D-S5148 Review

The Toshiba Satellite S855D-S5148 is one of those laptops witch offers very high performance in a very stylish package. It is finished inside and out in light blue brushed aluminum, it has a raised-tile keyboard with numeric keypad, and a chrome bordered touchpad. This finish will ensure that this laptop is not the fingerprint magnet that other models with glossy finishes are. Also because it’s brushed aluminum, eventual scratches will be harder to spot.
Inside this very good looking outside lies a very powerful AMD A-Series Quad-Core A10-4600M processor, running at 2.3 GHz most of the time, but it can boost itself all the way up to 3.2 GHz if needed. It also has 8 GB of DDR3 RAM at 1600 MHz, more than enough for anything you can throw at it. On top of these already amazing stats, it also has the AMD Radeon HD 7660G graphics card, capable of running any of today’s games without a problem. The storage capacity of 1 TB is also a very good addition to the whole package.
It comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows 8, Microsoft® Office 365 (30-day Trial), Norton™ Internet Security(30-day trial subscription), Norton™ Online Backup (30-day Trial), Norton™ Anti-Theft™ (30-day Trial) and a lot of Toshiba software to ensure your system is up-to-date and running smoothly. Most of the third party software is on a 1 month Trial period after witch the software requires you purchase it, if you like it. I really don’t agree with the whole trial idea, but having an antivirus and a firewall installed the first time you connect to the internet is very important with everything that’s online now. At least you have 30 days time to find the antivirus and firewall you think is best.
The only thing actually, and surprisingly, missing for a laptop at this price is the Bluetooth. Considering that most WiFi chips today also contain integrated Bluetooth connectivity, it’s a real shame Toshiba didn’t install one on this laptop. In case you need Bluetooth to synchronize with your mobile devices you can buy an USB Bluetooth micro adapter at the cost of keeping one of your USB Ports occupied. They are really compact and are barely noticeable.

Other than that the Toshiba Satellite S855D-S5148 has everything you need weather you are a gamer, power user, or even a student with a demanding major. I think it’s a perfect all-rounder and a really good buy.

Who is it for? discussing who would benefit most from this laptop...

  • Student
A student looking for a laptop in this price range is definitely looking for something capable of running some very specialized software. In this regard, the Toshiba Satellite S855D-S5148 has enough power under the hood to run any of the demanding design software, weather engineering, architecture, simulators, 3D modelling or others. Also the full sized keyboard with numeric keypad will surely be very useful for entering all your data fast and efficiently. So if you are one of the students doing a demanding major and are looking for something capable of getting through your studies I think this device is a very good choice for you.

  • Casual User
The performance stats of the Toshiba Satellite S855D-S5148 are exceptionally good if you are considering a long to very long term buy(4-6 years). It has a lot of space, RAM, and a good processor to ensure that any future everyday applications will run without any problem. The thing is, a casual user doesn't need all this performance and can get a really good laptop for their needs with a lot less witch will just last them long enough. Also I don't see casual users needing a AMD Radeon HD 7660G graphics card for everyday activities. I can recommend this laptop in case of a casual user only if he is considering it for a really long term buy, by witch time the technology inside it will sure have become obsolete.

  • Power User
Considering the performance needs of a Power User, I think the Toshiba Satellite S855D-S5148 has enough power to meet them. The RAM can be extended all the way up to 16 GB (there are 2 slots available, and as standard they are both occupied), the storage capacity is also big enough to save anything, and the quad-core AMD A10-4600M can boost all the way up to 3.2 GHz if needed. Also the AMD Radeon HD 7660G graphics card is more than capable to handle any 3D application and video processing. All in all I think this laptop is very good for high performance needs. Because it is an AMD based configuration it might overheat in full load and a cooling pat may be advisable.

  • Business User
A Business User will never use the Toshiba Satellite's S855D-S5148 AMD Radeon HD 7660G graphics card and because of the high overall performance available in this laptop, he will also never come close to it's limits. Considering the price of 580$ at the time of writing I think a Business User should take a look at an Ultrabook, they are slimmer, lighter, generally have very good battery life and have more than enough performance for the same price. In general they are a much better fit for the needs of a business user.

  • Gaming
Are you considering a gaming laptop under 600 dollars? Then the Toshiba Satellite S855D-S5148 is a perfect choice for you. The performance stats speak for themselves, you get the amazing AMD Radeon HD 7660G graphics card, 8 GB of DDR3 RAM, and a quad-core AMD A10-4600M capable of boosting all the way up to 3.2 GHz. I think this laptop makes an amazing gaming laptop for the money. This processor, graphics card combination is so capable it can even run Crysis 3 without a problem. I think this is very amazing for a laptop at this price.

PROs Vs. CONs

It's really amazing what level of performance one can get for just under 600 dollars. This Toshiba has a great quad-core AMD A10-4600M processor and 8 GB RAM. That alone is a very good combination, but it also comes with the AMD Radeon HD 7660G graphics card. This laptop can do anything you throw at it at the moment.

I was surprised to find that a laptop at around 600 dollars comes without Bluetooth, something you can find on nearly every laptop these days. Toshiba should have spent a little more time on the configuration because Bluetooth isn't that expensive to fit.

Summary

The Toshiba Satellite S855D-S5148 shows that it's not just a pretty face, it has a lot of power under that cover. I consider it an amazing buy for anyone, it can do anything you want it to do and even while being good looking it won't get full of fingerprints or scratches any time soon. As already mentioned the lack of Bluetooth is it's only weak point witch can be fixed cheaply with a USB Dongle.

    1. I did some digging around, Toshiba doesn’t specify anything regarding graphic memory in the specifications of this device. I have looked at similar models from other manufacturers and they also don’t specify the amount. What I did find is that the graphics card is integrated in the A10 CPU, so I guess that it uses some of the 8GB RAM, just like an Intel HD 4000 would.
