Toshiba Satellite C855-S5134 Review

Today we are taking a look at the Toshiba Satellite C855-S5134. This entry level 15.6-Inch Laptop (385$) has a surprisingly large amount of RAM from the factory. This will come in very useful for the people doing a lot of multitasking everyday. The processor on the other hand is a Intel Pentium 2020M Dual-Core running at 2.4 GHz witch will prove to be enough for normal everyday usage but will become a problem for people who don’t like to wait the extra second or two for a program to open. It also has the 500 GB HDD available on most devices at this price.
If you consider the processor to be to slow, but you like the overall aspect of the device you can check the Core i3 version here.
The main bonus point of this device is that it has a sturdy design, with a black textured finish. The textured finish will ensure that any stray fingerprints or minor scratches will be hard to spot. Even though it’s design is very conservative to say the least, there are some people who like a more down to earth laptop without all the eye catching shiny bits.
The only drawback of this device is the lack of a dedicated graphics card and even if it says Intel® HD graphics on the box, without an Intel i Core processor it will not be able to run anything but the most rudimentary 3D games.
As a bonus you get Windows 8 with all it’s eye candy and goodies preinstalled. You also get a lot of recent technology like USB 3.0 and HDMI as standard. Continue reading to see who can use this laptop best.

Who is it for? discussing who would benefit most from this laptop...

  • Student
The Toshiba Satellite C855-S5134 has all the necessities a modern Student may need. It has plenty of RAM for multitasking, like having a browser with many tabs, a music player and a document open all at the same time. In this respect this laptop is very useful. The processor performance will become an issue if you are studying engineering or something else with a lot of data to process. The lack of a graphics card won't pose much of a problem if you don't play games. It's surprising though that the battery life isn't better without a graphics card. All in all this is a good choice for a Student looking for a good cheap laptop.

  • Casual User
Anyone looking for a basic laptop to do the daily browsing, listening to some music, or watching some video will find the Toshiba Satellite C855-S5134 to have all they need. The 6 GB of preinstalled RAM will ensure that this device can be used for many years without much problems. The textured exterior will also ensure that it will look good even after 3-4 years of usage. It pretty much has anything a casual user needs, except maybe gaming, but I don't think that is a priority for a casual user.

  • Business User
A Business User will definitely like the Toshiba Satellite C855-S5134 for it's conservative and sturdy design. It also has a numeric keypad for fast and efficient data input. The 6 GB of RAM will ensure seamless multitasking and the 500 GB HDD will ensure that there is no lack of storage space. The lack of a dedicated graphics card will definitely not pose a problem for a business user, since he will probably never need one. The relatively slow processor may become an issue when you are pressed for time, but in 99% of the time I am sure it will do the job just fine.

  • Power User
The Power User will have to look to the more powerful and pricier i3 version of this device if they like the overall package. This version is, I think, a bit slow for a Power User.

  • Gaming
People looking for gaming from the Toshiba Satellite C855-S5134 will have to be disappointed. This device is good enough for everything else, but gaming is definitely something it can't do.

PROs Vs. CONs

The good thing about this laptop is that it comes with Microsoft Windows 8 preinstalled. I personally am not a fan of the new interface, but a lot of people seem to like it. The 6 GB of RAM will also ensure that this new operating system works without a hitch.

Even though the Toshiba Satellite C855-S5134 as a package is a good choice, I still have to say that the lack of any dedicated video card, means this device is not capable of any gaming. I also have to mention that the Intel Pentium processor is a entry level processor and for this price you would expect a Intel Core i3.

Summary

I have to conclude that the Toshiba Satellite C855-S5134 is a good entry level laptop with plenty of up to date goodies, like USB 3.0, HDMI, HD Webcam, and decent performance. This device will definitely not be capable of gaming, but it will shine everywhere else you may need it. I also think it's a bit overpriced considering that you only get a Intel Pentium processor for you money.
