Who is it for? discussing who would benefit most from this laptop...
- Student
Since student used programs aren't the strongest out there, having a whole lot of performance is a bit pointless. A decent ATI Radio HD 6520G integrated video card like this laptop has should prove very useful in the rendering programs (ATI cards are often better in rendering than Nvidia cards as they have a much larger Texel rate - they aren't as good as Nvidia in games, however, but that's a whole different story). The Ideapad Z575 12992DU is a nice offering for students.
- Casual User
The Lenovo Ideapad Z575 12992DU may be a bit too strong for a Casual user, but if you insist on purchasing it, know that it is quite perfect. All hardware strength (which is more than a casual user generally needs) aside, the huge 500 GB hard drive should provide enough space for all of your desired files and also the fact that comes with Pre-Installed Windows and other programs make it even better for the new users that aren't very tech savvy.
- Business User
The most valuable thing to take into consideration when buying a Business laptop is the mobility of the laptop. As this is not an ultrabook, you should consider stuff like the storage space and the data transfer methods. The lack of USB 3.0 makes it hard to transfer large files in blinding speeds. Also, the lack of a Bluetooth is noticeable as it comes quite in handy when you need to transfer a few files without actually complicating yourself with all sorts of cables. Anyway, the Lenovo Ideapad Z575 12992DU should run smoothly all the business apps that I'm aware of.
- Power User
The power user laptop should be capable of handling a lot stress usage and multitasking. Thus, the processor and RAM are very used in this process. The fact that this laptop has a Quad-Core processor (be it from AMD, it's still strong) and 4 GB of RAM should aid you quite nicely in that purpose. Plus, trust me when I say that it is pretty hard to find something good for power users in such a low budget. That's why the Ideapad Z575 12992DU is sort of like a diamond in the rust.
- Gaming
The main things to keep in mind when building a gaming laptop are the processor and video card. If possible, you should have all components at their peak, but those are the main ones to take into consideration. This laptop doesn't really have a dedicated video card, but its integrated one is still pretty powerful as to handle a moderate amount of games, provided you know how to set the details on Low. If you're in the market primarily for a gaming laptop priced under $600, I wouldn't recommend Lenovo Ideapad Z575 12992DU. Have a look at this one. Bigger screen, better graphics performance, better processor and... still a Lenovo :)
PROs Vs. CONs
One of the main features of this laptop is the fact that it has Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium on 64 bits preinstalled on it. This way, everyone can be satisfied with it, as there are many people who do not really like Windows 8. However, if you DO decide that you want Windows 8, I believe you can choose to Upgrade for a mere 15 dollars from the Microsoft Website.
One of the main disadvantages of this laptop, for me at least, is the lack of a dedicated video card. Sure, the integrated one is decent enough, but what if you want to try some 3D rendering or something similar? Then you will be stuck with something that is utterly ineffective for your purposes.
Also, a huge disadvantage is the lack of Bluetooth and USB 3.0. Without them the process of data transfer will be slow and you will have to complicate yourself with a whole mess of cables.
Also, the preinstalled programs are more troublesome than you might think. Sure, it's great for the newer users that aren't very experienced, but for the older users that already have their own set of programs that they use on a daily basis, a suite of new ones, that are only
User Reviews: what others think?
There are quite a few user reviews of this laptop at this time. Not all of them are positive, but most of them only point out minor flaws.
Probably the most notable user review was one that pointed out a flaw that is worth keeping in mind. Now I don't know whether it was referring to the product in general, or to his particular laptop, but apparently this user's laptop had a small - which can become major - design flaw. After about two months of extensive usage (the user claims he had to travel a lot, thus open and close the lid quite a bit), the user claims that the lid has started to somewhat malfunction due to its flimsy design. Now I too own a Lenovo with a similar design and
I have not experienced such a problem yet, perhaps it is only his laptop but only time will tell here.
RAM Upgrade for Lenovo Ideapad Z575 12992DU
Summary
In conclusion, this is a laptop that can satisfy all categories of users (granted, some a bit more than others). From casual use to quite a small bit of gaming and power use, this laptop has got it all for a relatively fair price. The design is comfortable and makes typing quite an enjoyable feat on it, not to mention that pretty much installs itself, as Lenovo go out of their way to make their products "idiot-proof" (or as easy to use and install as possible).
