The Exterior
The Lenovo IdeaPad G510s 15.6-Inch Touchscreen Laptop is part of Lenovo’s value line of notebooks and this is very obvious on the outside case. The case is finished in black textured plastic. The top cover feature the typical silver Lenovo logo on the upper left corner and the cover itself and the underside of the laptop are finished in basic textured plastic. This finish helps both with scratch avoidance and also makes imperfections less visible.
On the inside the 15.6-Inch Touchscreen is surrounded by a black plastic rim, containing the webcam and integrated microphone centered above the screen and the Lenovo logo in siver underneath it. The Touchscreen supports 10-point multi-touch technology, allowing you to use both hands if you need to. The inner surface comes with a black brushed aluminum layer to make it feel and look better. On the top left corner we find the power button and Lenovo’s One Key Recovery button. Underneath that we find Lenovo’s raised tile style keyboard in black with a numerical pad with the Ctr and Fn keys in the normal order. This keyboard is present on many other Lenovo laptops and we have described it in the past as being a very good keyboard once you get used to its “feel”.
Slightly off-center underneath the keyboard we find the touchpad making it very comfortable to type on this device. Just under the touchpad, on the outer rim we find the status LEDs followed by the 2 built-in speakers located on each side just under the outer rim on the underside. This isn’t a very good location for built-in speakers as they can get easily covered up by clothes or any soft surface the laptop may be sitting on.
The Connectivity
The Lenovo IdeaPad G510s features all the common connectivity options available at the moment.
It features a Kensington lock port, the DVD-RW optical drive, one USB 2.0, a card reader and the Mic/Headphones combo port on the right side. On the left side it comes equipped with the power port, VGA port, Lan port, HDMI port, and 2 USB 3.0 ports.
Further connectivity options include Bluetooth and Wireless WiFi 802.11b/g/n connectivity.
The Performance
The Lenovo IdeaPad G510s comes with a lot of performance for a 15.6-Inch Touchscreen laptop in this price range. It comes equipped with the 4th generation Intel Core i5-4200M running at 2.5 Ghz. With the help of Turbo Boost it can increase its clock rates up to 3.1 Ghz depending on load and needed performance. This processor also comes with the new Intel HD Graphics 4600, making it about 30 % faster than a similarly clocked HD 4000. This means that games that would run on the HD 4000 will run much smoother with better details on this newer card.
To this we have the addition of 6 GB of DDR3 RAM making this a very potent laptop. Multitasking and memory intensive applications won’t pose a problem for this laptop. The additional 1 TB of storage space makes it a device capable of being usable even in a couple of years time.
The battery life is quoted by Lenovo at up to 5 hour of productive time.
The overall performance is average for laptops in this price range but it is above average for a touchscreen enabled laptop. This makes it one of the best touchscreen laptops at the moment.
