HP Pavilion g7-2240us Review

A 2012 laptop, this gorgeous HP product is something that should fit many a customer. Its build is great for almost all categories of users. The price may not be so versatile to all categories, but the configuration sure is.

This little laptop (and I am using the term “little” as a joke mostly, as this is a 17.3″ screen equipped device) is quite proficient in most of the tasks you may have for it. The speed of the laptop is quite notice-able as it has a 2nd Generation Intel i3 processor and around 6 GB of RAM. Put together, that makes for a pretty decent Power User laptop, or at least one with a more restricted budget.

At the time of this review, the discount for HP Pavilion g7-2240us is quite big: you can get it for around 480 dollars out of 629.99 (the list price). That’s almost 24%. Still, it’s better than nothing. I urge you to act quickly, however, as there are very few left in stock.

Who is it for? discussing who would benefit most from this laptop...

  • Student
As a student you're generally interested in all the things such as speed or being able to use the laptop in a whole lot of tasks, but you aren't interested in paying a whole lot for the laptop. The practicality of this particular laptop is quite large, therefore it's price is well deserved. The 2nd Generation Intel i3 processor should provide a ton of strength all by itself ( sure, it would have been better were it a 3rd generation on, but we take what we can get ). Also, add to that equation the 6 GB of RAM that this HP Pavilion g7-2240us has, and you end up with a pretty darn strong monster of a machine.

  • Casual User
Casual users should generally be interested in laptops they can get in under 400 dollars, as those are more their power. There is no use in paying for something you may never get to use at its full potential. The HP Pavilion g7-2240us is more than strong enough for any Casual user task, but I fear it is a bit stronger than necessary. The huge storage space of 750 GB at around 5400 RPM is really awesome. I myself own such a hard drive and since I have it, I can honestly say that the fear of running out of space is now a thing of the past. The HP Pavilion g7-2240us should be more than perfect for any casual user.

  • Business User
The laptops I generally recommend for business users are Ultrabooks, for no other reason than that they are quite mobile. As far as the mobility and ease of travel of this laptop are concerned, the HP Pavilion g7-2240us isn't the best choice. The 17.3" screen prevents it from being as versatile and easy to carry as a 15.6" screen laptop, but the larger screen offers more work-space. Also, you are clearly trading in mobility with performance with this laptop, and that is more than an even trade, in my opinion. The extremely powerful and yet extremely silent cooling method of this laptop is incredible. Also, the laptop has a whole lot of bells and whistles guaranteed to ease your efforts. Things such as USB 3.0 ports (of which it has 2) and Bluetooth or HDMI are invaluable in the Business world, as far as I see it. It is all about the speed of data-transfer, and trust me when I say that nothing beats the USB 3.0's speed (at least, not at the moment). HP Pavilion g7-2240us should handle very well all the business apps that I'm aware of.

  • Power User
Power users all around should consider something strong enough as to handle high doses of multitasking. HP Pavilion g7-2240us is quite perfect for that, as its combo of Intel i3 2370M and 6 GB of DDR3 RAM make for a great amount of multitasking. Combined with the large amount of storage space and the strong integrated video card you get a machine that is capable of doing just about anything. I believe you can even do 3D rendering on it with relative ease, even despite the lack of a dedicated video card. Still, I wouldn't over-do it on this laptop. This is something made for the power user on a budget, so it is nowhere near the strength of a custom-built power user laptop. If you're on a budget and you're looking for a pretty decent laptop, then HP Pavilion g7-2240us is something to consider.

  • Gaming
To use a laptop in gaming you have to have something with all of its components at their peak. That is due to the high demand of hardware specifications of games nowadays. Therefore, I wouldn't really recommend this laptop for gaming. The HD 3000 is a strong video card, a very strong one actually, but not strong enough as to run some of the newer titles. If it does run them, it will do so on the lowest of details. You can still run games such as Battlefield 3 on it, or anything older than it, but I'd rule out things like Assassin's Creed 3 or Hitman: Absolution. If you're on a budget and you're looking for a cheap gaming laptop (for light-gaming) then HP Pavilion g7-2240us can be a solution.

PROs Vs. CONs

One of the best things about this laptop is that it has a pre-installed version of Microsoft Windows 8. Now I don't know about where you live, but a Windows license generally comes at quite a steep price (and with good reason), so having one included in the price of the laptop is a pretty big plus. I can't vouch for Windows 8, however, as I don't really like it or use it. I may use it perhaps, at some point, but not soon.

I personally disagree with the lack of a dedicated video card. Sure, the integrated one ( the HD 3000 ) is at around 1664 MB of power, but in the end it comes down to power, power which an integrated graphics card does not provide so much as a dedicated one. Also, another thing that irks me about this laptop is the fact that it WILL have some preinstalled programs. Personally, as I'm sure a whole lot of you experienced users do, I have a very specific suite of programs that I use on a daily basis. Therefore, I do not really like trying out any new ones as more often then not I compare them to the ones I already know and end up thinking badly about the new ones. Therefore, were it not for the Windows License, I would very much prefer something which comes as a Free-DOS, rather tha having all sorts of bloatwares installed.

User Reviews: what others think?

I am unsure what to say about the reliability of this laptop. While browsing through the majority of user reviews I've noticed two things: the HP Pavilion g7-2240us has certain hardware problems that occur on random occasions (but I cannot vouch for any of them as I haven't personally used the laptop), however, the customer support is great, it always ensuring that the customer is satisfied. The most notable reviews, as most of them simply praise the quality and strength of the device, are the negative ones. The one that caught my attention was that of a person that claimed to receive a damaged laptop. As with anything, there is always that 1 in a thousand or 1 in a million (probably not the case with laptops) chance that you will get something which is damaged. In this user's cases, HP went out of their way to ensure the satisfaction of said user, even going so far as to offer him / her coupon after coupon and all sorts of apologies, all in hopes that that user will someday consider buying a HP product again.

Summary

In conclusion, this HP g7-2240us can be used by all categories, but as is with all items in this world, some will benefit more than other from it. Take the extremes for instance: this laptop may be a bit too much for a Casual User, both in performance and price, and it may be a bit too less for a Gamer (at least so it is for a gamer that is hoping to run the latest of titles).
