HP Envy DV6-7218NR Review

This is a fairly new laptop built for those who don’t actually have the highest of budgets to purchase a powerful laptop. It can still get the job done and handle most activities, but don’t expect it to run heavy doses of multitasking or any new games.

I am ashamed to admit that I am not very familiar with the AMD processors as I have always chosen Intel whenever given the choice. In retrospect, it may have not been the best idea in certain cases, but I believe the same would have happened with AMD. Both have their ups and their downs.

Now, out of curiosity I decided to search for a few stress tests of this processor. The conclusion was satisfactory and close to my expectations: this processor isn’t the best of them, but it is decent and it is hard to find something much better than it for such a low budget. The processor scored around 1579 benchmark points. That’s decent and it is ranking just a few steps below the 2nd Generation Intel i3 notebook processors (which I think they have around 1690~1700). This is pretty good, in my opinion. As I said, you can find something a bit better for this price, but not much better.

The original price of the laptop was 549.99 dollars, but if you hurry and purchase it now you can get it cheaper, thus saving some dollars. Plus, with the extra features that this laptop has, it is pretty much worth its price. At the time of this review, the HP Envy DV6-7218NR is on sale at Amazon.com.

Who is it for? discussing who would benefit most from this laptop...

  • Student
The student laptop should be build considering a very important aspect: price. Something that is as price-effective as possible would be the perfect student laptop. This particular device is great for students: HP Envy DV6-7218NR has sufficient hardware strength, a lot of bells and whistles that ease transfer of data quite a bit and is also at a relatively good price ( especially with the discount ). The extremely large 640 GB hard drive is more than big enough as to handle a whole lot of data and also the many high-speed USB ports make slow data transfer a thing of the past. I honestly think the HP Envy DV6-7218NR could be a great fit for the students.

  • Casual User
A casual user doesn't really need something with a whole lot of power, so this laptop may be a bit stronger than they truly require. While I would normally suggest looking for something that is around 100 dollars cheaper than this one, the HP Envy DV6-7218NR is still a pretty good contender. The fact that its hardware is decent should be good for a few things. Also, all casual users should appreciate the fact that this laptop comes with a pre-installed version of Windows 8 and a few programs. While the more experienced users will not really agree with this, it is a big plus for the beginners as it doesn't take a whole lot of time and skill to set up. All you need do is start it up and the laptop will do all the work.

  • Business User
While I normally recommend Ultrabooks for business users, as they provide a decent amount of performance while limiting the occupied space, there are certain cases in which a regular laptop can be the substitute. This is one of those cases, especially if you are a businessman on a very small budget. HP Envy DV6-7218NR isn't a very strong one, but it has a lot of data transfer modes that are sure to ease the burden of your work. For one thing, it has 3 USB 3.0 ports, USB 3.0 being the fastest USB transfer mode currently available. Not only that, but this device also has Bluetooth on it, in case you need to transfer some files from your PC to your phone without actually complicating yourself with all sorts of cables and adapters. HP Envy DV6-7218NR should easily run most of the business applications I'm aware of.

  • Power User
Normally the power user laptop is something with enough strength as to maintain a whole lot of multitasking. HP Envy DV6-7218NR isn't one such laptop. I would not really recommend this as a power user laptop as it isn't actually suitable for power users. If you are a power user and are looking for something good, my recommendation would be to spend the extra buck, go the extra mile and purchase something on a custom order. That way, you know it will last you a bit more than the rest. The processor and RAM of this device simply do not allow for power users to profit from its usage. It would be great if perhaps the RAM was at a 1860 MHz Frequency, but that is so rare that few people even know of its existence. The good part is that you can easily upgrade it's memory to 8GB. The HP Envy DV6-7218NR laptop can hold a maximum of 8GB of DDR3 memory, with one 4GB module installed to each slot. Although this is a good laptop, it will perform even better once you upgrade the RAM from 4GB to 8GB.

  • Gaming
The standard gaming laptop is the apex of laptop technology, or so it should be.In the eventuality that you purchase a gaming laptop and it is weak, you are making a very bad investment. In the end, that is what you are doing when getting a gaming laptop - making an investment into something that will hopefully last you more than half of a decade. Needless to point out, HP Envy DV6-7218NR isn't at all useful for gamers around. It may run some of the older titles, but there is no chance whatsoever of it running any of the newer ones. Its main disadvantage is the lack of a dedicated video card. Sure, the AMD Radeon HD 7520G integrated video card is a very strong one in itself, it cannot hope to equal a dedicated one of the same strength.

PROs Vs. CONs

One of the best features of this laptop is the fact that it has Microsoft Windows 8 preinstalled on it, thus in the price of the laptop is also included the price for a license for Windows 8. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of of Windows 8 and have never used it myself. However, I have heard an astonishing amount of people complain about unresolved bugs and similar problems with it. I advise installing an older Windows 7 on it, for the time being at least.

The lack of a dedicated video card is a pretty noticeable flaw for gamers, at least as far as I am concerned. Sure, the integrated video card is strong enough as to handle a decent number of tasks, but a strong dedicated one never hurt anybody (except maybe your wallet / bank account), The pre-installed software, at least for me, is a very annoying feature. All experienced people have their own set of programs that they use. If you are like me and don't take kindly to new programs, especially trials.

User Reviews: what others think?

Unfortunately, there are no user reviews of this laptop as of yet. You could be the first to review it - all you have to do is purchase HP Envy DV6-7218NR and share your opinions of it to the world.

RAM Upgrade to 8GB for HP Envy DV6-7218NR

Summary

In conclusion, this is pretty much a low budget laptop useful for only a few categories. Unfortunately, the power user and gamers will find no reason to purchase this device as it offers no performance in their field of activity. However, if you do decide to purchase it, know that you may find the operating system a bit challenging, especially if you've never used it before.
