UPDATE 15 December 2012 = There’s a Newer Version of This Laptop. Click here.

At under $430 (at the time of this review), the HP 2000-2a20NR laptop offers decent performance (it offers basic-to-moderate computing power, in my opinion) for a very attractive price. It’s an affordable & solid option for both casual and business users, as well as college students headed back to school. You can count on this model as an everyday laptop for everyone to use.

integrated Graphic Card & Pretty Strong Processor
The processor is the Intel B970 running at 2.3 Ghz (with 2 MB of Cache, 2 Cores, 64-Bit support, based on the Sandy Bridge architecture). It integrates a graphic card called Intel HD Graphics that is based on the HD Graphics 2000 clocked at 650 / 1100 (with Turbo Boost) according to notebookcheck.net , allowing you to play only the low demanding games in the lowest details settings. You can read more about the processor & graphics specifications on the official Intel website over here.

Another great feature is that, in addition to the GPU, the Intel HD Graphics 2000 chip also houses some dedicated units for decoding and encoding HD videos. Is also good to know, that the power consumption of the GPU is quite low and suited for small and light laptops.

HP 2000-2a20NR Memory RAM Upgrade from 4GB to 8GB
HP 2000-2a20NR comes with one slot of 4GB DDR3 memory installed. The maximum supported memory for this laptop is 8GB. If you plan to buy this laptop and improve it’s performance even more (mainly for power users) you can buy another 4GB DDR3 (from one slot). Although HP 2000-2a20NR is a good laptop, it will perform even better once you upgrade the RAM from 4GB to 8GB.

HP 2000-2a20NR has a 500GB size HDD running at 5400RPM, using a feature called ProtectSmart, to protect your stored data from sudden impacts. It’s more than enough for casual users, business people, college students and even light gamers. You can now store more picture, songs, movies and other decouments with this large 500GB hard drive.

The 6-cell battery offers up to 5 hours & 30 mins of up-time, without recharging.

Who is it for? discussing who would benefit most from this laptop...

  • Casual User
The HP 2000-2a20NR is capable for day-to-day routine tasks, such as web, email or word processing, as well as high-def media playback, while gaming is possible only for the lowest graphics settings on select game titles. You won't break the bank with this model, for sure. HP 2000-2a20NR is very cheap and it will offer you good performance for the money. You don't need to spend a fortune on a laptop if you will use it mostly for emailing, playing some music, watching movies, basic word processing like Word or Excel, browsing the web, etc.

  • Student
Easy to carry around, plenty of HDD storage (500 GB), enough RAM (4GB @ 1333 MHz), quite powerful processor and together with other nice features like ProtectSmart, HDMI, 5 hours and a half of uptime makes this laptop perfect for students. If you're a student you should really give HP 2000-2a20NR a try!

  • Business User
Looking at the features and specs, the HP 2000-2a20NR looks like a good fit for business users. With a 2.3 Ghz processor, 64-Bit support, 4GB of DDR3 RAM and 500 GB of hard drive space, this laptop will run most business applications out there. The only inconvenient might be the missing Bluetooth connection, but for $15-$20 you can always but a dongle (USB Bluetooth adapter for laptop) and you're done. Oh and, if you you're considering this laptop for business use, don't forget about the great up-time of (up to) 5 hours and 30 minutes and the weight of only 5.39 lbs. Business users will appreciate the portability of the HP 2000-2a20NR.

  • Power User
As a power user, the first thing I would do is upgrade the RAM memory to 8GB. Upgrading it will only cost around $20 (at the time of this review) and it will give you extra power. The HP 2000-2a20NR only has 4GB of DDR3 installed and although it should multitask well in it’s factory form, the HP 2000-2a20NR will perform even better once you upgrade the RAM memory.

  • Gaming
HP 2000-2a20NR laptop comes with an integrated video card called Intel HD graphics with up to 1696MB total graphics shared memory. From NotebookCheck.net we found out that Intel HD Graphics is based on the HD Graphics 2000 that has no dedicated memory but shares the fast Level 3 Cache with the CPU cores and also part of the main DDR3 memory. Keep in mind the fact that the HP 2000-2a20NR laptop comes with default 4GB DDR3 (from 1 DIMM, meaning it's using only 1 of the 2 available memory slots). Serious gamers should probably look for other models. The 2000-2a20NR wasn't built for serious gaming users.

PROs Vs. CONs

The HP 2000-2a20NR comes with several great features like ProtectSmart (offers HDD protection from sudden impact), reliable performance for everyday tasks with B970 Intel processor, lots of HDD space (500 GB), decent amount of DDR3 RAM memory.

The HP 2000-2a20NR only offers 4GB of installed memory. Power users should probably spend an extra $20 upgrading it to 8GB of RAM.

User Reviews: what others think?

At the time of this review, there are only 6 customers who posted a review on Amazon for the 2000-2a20NR HP laptop, and all of them are positive. I would gladly tell you about the bad ones as well, but nobody has had a reason to complain about it yet. Then again, HP is pretty reliable with their products and even in the very slim chance that you will get a bad product, they will do all in their power to help you.

Summary

If you're looking for a cheap laptop with decent performance, this model might be a good fit. The HP 2000-2a20NR is suited quite nicely for students, casual users and aspiring business people. The combination of modern features, awesome design, and a pretty lightweight notebook probably makes this model a good option for you.
