Dell Inspiron i15N-2728BK Review

Time to take a look at yet another marvelous laptop from Dell, the Inspiron i15N-2728BK. If you value mobility and like to put an emphasis on the looks of the device, this is definitely something that will interest you. This laptop is fairly light since it doesn’t have any metallic coating on it or any aluminium brush. However, this may come as a bit of a disadvantage. There are many people that view a laptop clad in plastic as flimsy, or somewhat easy to break. However, from what I’ve seen in the user reviews, it is anything but easy to brake. Oh and, at the time of this review, this model was priced around $400-$430.

Dell is one of the most reliable manufacturers I know of (back in 2007 I bought a Dell Inspiron 1525 and it still runs perfectly. I just upgraded it to 4GB of RAM cause it had only 2GB with the default configuration). They really do stand behind their products. Well, in all certainty, having them right there if you require their assistance is quite good, but it’s even better since you rarely require their assistance. I’ve heard of people claiming that they’ve owned a Dell that hasn’t caused the slightest problem for more than 8 years. These laptops (or PCs – I’m talking about Dell in general) may be a bit more costly than the rest of the run-of-the-mill devices, but they are certainly better. If not better, then they last longer in their life and are a bit more reliable.

This particular Dell is no exception. Hell, I dare you to try and find something better than this for such a small price. This laptop (i15N-2728BK) is a monster with a Second Generation Intel i3 Processor, 6 GB of DDR3 RAM, a 500 GB HDD and a whole lot of features such as Bluetooth or HD Audio. Heck, the Dell Inspiron i15N-2728BK should do just nicely for just about any task.

And also, I happen to know this for a fact. If you happen to receive a defective model (this happens with absolutely everything since whenever there is a device made, or anything in general, there will always be one or two faulty ones in the lot – after all, they are all made by humans and humans make mistakes), Dell will not hesitate to change it for you. I am aware of people actually getting a new one in close to 4 days. How many other manufacturers can claim they can move so fast?

Who is it for? discussing who would benefit most from this laptop...

  • Student
As a student myself, I can honestly say that there is little time for you to do anything. Between classes and work, little time remains for anything else. Therefore, a student will not really require such a strong device. The recommended laptop configuration for a student is one with not a lot of bells and whistles, and most importantly, one that's cheap. Therefore, getting the Inspiron i15N-2728BK would be a very good idea, especially at the current time. You'd be saving around 150 dollars on it. This laptop is one that can handle just about any task a student can think of, without actually bringing any extra bells and whistles you may never actually use.

  • Casual User
As I see it, a casual user is somebody that rarely uses the PC for any demanding task. Most casual users I know only use the PC for web-browsing, social-networking and the occasional movie and / or game. Therefore, a minimal number of resources is needed for these categories. With that in mind, I'd say that the Dell Inspiron i15N-2728BK provides a bit more than is required by said category of users. Unless you want to go spend a lot of money for something you may never know how to use as a casual user, I'd suggest going for a cheaper laptop which doesn't have so many features as this one. In general, anything under 400 dollars should suffice.

  • Business User
The average Business user is someone that values mobility above all else. This mobility must also be matched by a bit of performance, or else you could just get a Smartphone. While I generally only recommend Ultrabooks for business users, I'd say that this device is pretty good as well. While it may not have the mobility of an Ultrabook, it does have more strength than the average Ultrabook and it is much cheaper to boot. Dell i15N-2728BK is strong enough to handle just about any program you throw at it and quite a bit of multitasking as well.

  • Power User
Power users and gamers are the categories that use the PC and are actually fully aware of what they are doing and how to make the most of the PC's resources. A power user requires a laptop with an incredible amount of strength. Needless to say, I would not recommend this for the power users with high expectations. There is only so much a laptop can do, especially one at such a price. Power users should just stick to their dedicated custom-built laptops if they truly want performance in any and all tasks. i15N-2728BK may be usable in a few of these tasks, but it cannot provide the performance a professional power use laptop can provide.

  • Gaming
A gaming laptop is basically the same thing as a Power Use laptop, but it also has a powerful video card, item which the laptops in the previous category tend to lack. Again I say the same thing as before: Dell Inspiron i15N-2728BK is not recommended if you desire performance in games or other things. It excels in all other things, but if performance is truly what you seek, try looking at something that costs more than 1000 dollars and compare it afterwards with this device. You will see what I mean when you research it a bit on yourself. While the video card of this device is a good one, the HD 3000 cannot be used if you want to play really high demanding video games and play them well. You can try toning down the details and quality, and in that scenario you may even run things like Battlefield 3, but you won't run it as smooth as you would on an HD 4000 or a dedicated gaming video card. Casual gamers may be happy with i15N-2728BK.

PROs Vs. CONs

i15N-2728BK comes with a pre-installed version of Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium on 64 bit. I also believe that Microsoft is having a sale in which you can upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for a mere 15 dollars if you purchase any device with Windows 7 on it. The disadvantage to this may be the partitioning of Windows. If it doesn't strike your fancy, you can always perform a clean install and then use the key on the back to activate it online and make your copy Genuine. The manufacturers also claim that the device has something called High Definition Audio v2.2 installed on it, making it sound quite astonishing. I have yet to test it for myself, but do feel free to tell me how you like it after trying it out.

For me the fact that it lacks a dedicated video card is a huge turn off. I am one of those few individuals that has high expectations in PCs and requires a full set of items in order to use it at its best. Also, the fact that the device has no keypad is also a bit of a nuisance. I definitely use that part of the keyboard a lot and found it quite vital. The pre-installed software is also quite annoying, but you can probably get rid of it (most of it, anyway).

User Reviews: what others think?

There are quite a lot of user reviews about this device. Out of them, a few tend to stand out. Of course, most of them only praise the device for its great performance, aspect and reliability. But there are some that aren't so happy with what they got. One reviewer that stood out claimed that they got a defective model, which is only natural (I've already mentioned why) as there is always a 1 in 1000 chance of getting a bad SOMETHING (no matter what that something is). This reviewer also said that Dell acted promptly to help them and replaced their device in less than 4 days. Now that time is quite good, as few can actually say that they received such prompt service from other manufacturers.

Summary

In conclusion, this is a device that looks great, functions great, is light and easy to transport and can be used by a very large variety of people. I would definitely recommend this device for most categories, but I believe there are some better alternatives for some categories. However, with how our life is, there is always an alternative to anything, no matter what.
