ASUS K55N-DS81 Review

Today I am taking a look at the new ASUS K55N-DS81 priced at the moment at 399$. I have to say I am immediately surprised by it’s performance for the price it is at. It has a very good AMD® APU A8-4500M Processor running at 1.9 GHz, 4 GB DDR3 RAM, 500 GB of storage and a very good AMD Radeon® Mobility™ HD7640G graphics card. The performance figures of this device are very good for almost any usage you have in mind. Maybe if you are considering some serious gaming you might need to upgrade the RAM, but other that that it pretty much has everything you need.
The black back cover and also the palm rest have a very nice textured finish, witch means that fingerprints will not be visible on this laptop and it will always look good. The display is the normal 15.6-inch size and has little to no design ques around it. Overall the exterior design is very classic, with some minor style ques here and there. Because of this I am very tempted to say the build quality will be good.
The biggest plus I see for this laptop is the fact that it comes with premium Altec Lansing® Speakers witch will ensure very good sound quality even without exterior speakers. This feature will most likely be very useful for students and people with space problems. This laptop also comes with a full sized keyboard with numerical pad and also a relatively large touchpad witch will aid in the ease of use of this device.
Also a big bonus it that the ASUS K55N-DS81 comes with a 1 Year Accidental Damage Warranty. This means that ASUS will fix/change it in case you accidentally drop it and it stops working. This may also suggest that the laptop is pretty solidly built.

Who is it for? discussing who would benefit most from this laptop...

  • Student
Considering the price and the overall performance I have to say the ASUS K55N-DS81 is a very good choice for a student. Because of the exterior design it will take any scratches and scrapes without them being so visible as on a more stylish model. The premium Altec Lansing sound system will ensure that you can listen to your music in very good quality and on top of that it also has a Radeon HD7640G graphics card in case you also consider some gaming after classes. The 4GB of RAM is more than enough for web browsing, writing a paper and mostly anything a student has to throw at it. Maybe if you are an engineering student you might need to upgrade the RAM to it's maximum of 8GB if you are running any memory intensive programs.

  • Casual User
The Casual User can find that the ASUS K55N-DS81 has pretty much anything he wants, and more. It has a good 1.9 GHz processor, enough ram for daily usage and 500GB to store all the family photos, music, or anything else you need. It comes with very good internal speakers provided by Altec Lansing so buying an extra pair of speakers for this laptop may not be needed. The only thing extra to this whole package is the AMD Radeon HD7640G graphics card, witch will most likely never be used.

  • Power User
A Power User might consider the ASUS K55N-DS81, but will most likely require more processing power and RAM from his laptop. This device is good enough to cope with daily usage and some gaming on the side, but I think it will not be a good choice for a Power User. In this case I have to advice against the purchase of this laptop for a Power User.

  • Business User
The Business User will definitely like the ASUS K55N-DS81 for it's work environment friendly design, good overall performance and full sized keyboard. This device has a very good battery life also, of up to 5.5 hours witch will aid in the case of business travels, or working on a commute to work and back. The only things that are overkill if you are considering this laptop for business is the premium Altec Lansing speakers, and the AMD Radeon HD7640G graphics card. You will probably never actually need them, but they are there.

  • Gaming
The ASUS K55N-DS81 si a good choice for someone wanting to play games on his laptop. The combination of AMD® APU A8-4500M processor and Radeon HD7640G graphics card will offer good performance in gaming. It will definitely be able to play most if not all the recent games out there, even if on low to medium details. The only thing to consider with this laptop is that a RAM upgrade is a necessity for serious gaming.

PROs Vs. CONs

The best things about this laptop is the fact that you get the Altec Lansing sound system, witch is rare at this price. It also has a dedicated AMD Radeon HD 7640G graphics card witch is very usefull if you consider gaming. Another benefit is also the scratch and fingerprint friendly exterior.

Considering the fact that Webcams have become a standard on all laptops for many years now, it is disappointing to find that the ASUS K55N-DS81 only has a 0.3 MP camera. It really is pushing the envelope on how low you can go.

Summary

In conclusion I have to say that the ASUS K55N-DS81 can have a myriad of usages, with enough performance to perform almost any task you may throw at it (considering the devices performance of course). I would have to say this laptop is a very good choice for students based on it's fingerprint and scratch friendly exterior, premium sound system and it's gaming abilities. Gamers will also find that the ASUS K55N-DS81 will offer a good gaming experience for the price.
