Toshiba Satellite C875-S7340 Review

Launched in mid October, with a price tag below $550, the C875-S7340 is one of the latest offerings from Toshiba. I can tell you right from the start what caught my attention regarding the published specs: the powerful 3rd generation Intel i3-3110M processor, the large amount of RAM, 6GB of DDR3 to be more specific, and the 17.3-inch display size. Add the 640GB of disk space and we have a pretty strong budget laptop here.

Toshiba Satellite C875-S7340 is also a good looking laptop with a modern design. With the Intel HD 4000 Graphics card and the 1900 x 900 resolution it will be a pleasure to play the latest movies, browse the web, etc. I think it’s a pretty solid laptop suitable for students, casual users, and even casual gamers. Business people might have a problem with the lack of a Bluetooth connection, the big 17.3-inch size display could be a little uncomfortable to carry around and the 5.7 lbs. weight.

Who is it for? discussing who would benefit most from this laptop...

  • Student
From a student's perspective, I can honestly say that you will not have a lot of free time. If you want to go to all the classes and also work in your spare time, you will most certainly find that time is precious, and you do not have a lot. Therefore, the logical conclusion would be that you do not need something with a whole bunch of power. But then again, what if you get a bit of spare-time? The Satellite C875-S7340 is perfect for a student, in my opinion. It is average in strength (compared to the most powerful ones of today) and it is highly upgradable in case you require more. You will have plenty of space to use (640 GB) sufficient amount of RAM memory (6GB DDR3) and a powerful enough processor allowing you to play most of the latest games out there (in low-to-medium video settings). Pretty good I'd say.

  • Casual User
From all the causal users I've met, I can say that none of them is really all that proficient in the use of the PC. Most of them limit themselves to activities such as web-browsing, movies, music, pictures and the occasional small indie / arcade game. That is why it is safe to assume that any PC can get the job done. I would most certainly not recommend this device for casual users. You can find something much less powerful and much more cheap around. You can even settle for a Under 400$ laptop. However, if you can afford it a little extra power is always nice to have.

  • Business User
The average business user should value mobility above all else. That is why I believe that the perfect laptop for a business user would be the Ultrabook. However, those cost quite a lot. In this particular case: you are offered a choice - either purchase a very weak Ultrabook or use the money to purchase this more powerful laptop. Personally, I'd recommend you get this Satellite C875-S7340 if you're ok with the lack of the Bluetooth connection and the display size and wight.

  • Power User
The power user laptop should be the most powerful laptop out there. I believe that all components need to be at their peak. I don't really see the need of a strong dedicated video card in a power user laptop, but the rest should be at their utmost best. Provided you upgrade the RAM of this device to its maximum, you will create it into the perfect Power User laptop. If you are on a budget and want something relatively reliable, don't hesitate to get the Satellite C875-S7340 from Toshiba.

  • Gaming
The gaming laptop is the apex of laptop technology. The definition of the gaming laptop is basically the same as the power user laptop, except you also add a strong dedicated video card to the mix as well. The Toshiba Satellite C875-S7340 should be pretty good for gaming. If you upgrade the RAM, it is great for gaming. The laptop doesn't have a dedicated video card, but it has a strong integrated video card. The HD 4000 video card is so strong that it can run even the latest titles, provided you know how to set your in-game details.

PROs Vs. CONs

One of the best points of this laptop is the fact that it has Microsoft Windows 8 pre-installed on it. Of course, I am not the biggest fan of Microsoft Windows 8, but that is only because I do not have a touchscreen equipped PC / laptop. This windows will run so much better if you also have a touchscreen. The RAM of the device is also a double-edged sword. On one hand, you can upgrade its already existent 6 GB of DDR3 RAM at 1600 MHz, but on the other hand, you will have to get rid of a 2 GB card if you want to put in 16.

The fact that this laptop is lacking a dedicated video card is quite bothersome, for me at least. I am a person that uses said component quite a lot in their daily life. Also a big disadvantage I found is the pre-installed software. While normally that will come in handy as it will not take a whole lot of time to set up the laptop, most of those programs are just trials that do nothing besides beg you to purchase the full version.

User Reviews: what others think?

Unfortunately, there is only 1 user review at the moment, and that one isn't very encouraging. It definitely does not encourage you to go out there and easily purchase this device without thinking twice. The only person that reviewed this laptop said that they bought it when it came out and it was less than ideal. It most certainly wasn't what they were expecting. They said they sent it to some professional friends to analyze it, and the results were pretty bad. In the end, they found it lacking in more than a few departments. I have managed to find this quote: "Unit was purchased from Amazon and is missing many software that comes from manufacturer. Also had diagnostics software that started at boot that put unit to sleep every 30 sec. Recommend returning to Amazon for refund or exchange."

UPDATE: few weeks later other 2 positive reviews were posted on Amazon. Check them out as well.

Summary

In conclusion, this is a laptop that can suit almost every category out there, but some others should steer clear of it. In the end, it's up to you to know what you need a laptop for, and then decide how much you're willing to pay for it. For a Casual User, for instance, this would not be the most ideal of laptops (read above why I believe this). The Satellite C875-S7340 is great for Gaming or Power Users on a budget, however.
