HP Pavilion g7-2238nr Review

This is a fairly recently announced laptop with a relatively decent hardware configuration. What makes it truly unique is the fact that it has a 17.3″ screen, fact which is incredibly rare among laptops of this budget.

The discount on this laptop is quite huge. While the full price of it is normally 599.99 dollars (it’s the list price), you can get it for around 420 (at the time of this review), which means you’re saving around 180 dollars. Now I’m not sure about most people but to me it is one of the more interesting bargains I have seen.

The looks of this laptop are positively superb. While with many devices you say something like “Damn the looks, I want performance”, that is not the case of this device. The HP Pavilion g7-2238nr is a real beauty to look at, but not as strong as other laptops. Still, for such a low budget I doubt you will find something better. It could probably be improved by replacing its processor with an Intel equivalent or perhaps an i3 or something, but that my just be the fan-boy in me talking.

Who is it for? discussing who would benefit most from this laptop...

  • Student
The main thing a student should be interested in when considering to buy a laptop is price. In the end, it comes to this: how deep will the hole in which you fall in be (in this case, the hole is the debt). The processor of the HP Pavilion g7-2238nr may not be the best, but it most certainly is strong enough as to handle any task a student can think of. Its benchmarks put it just below the 2nd Gen of Intel i3 (the weaker ones, but it's still good enough). Plus the large hard drive of 500 GB should be quite enough for a lot of files and also the plenty USB 3.0 ports should make transfer times (if you have a USB 3.0 flash drive) drop down to the blink of an eye.

  • Casual User
Most casual users don't really know a whole lot about computers, so not a whole bunch of hardware strength is actually required. Provided you buy it for the price it is at now, HP Pavilion g7-2238nr is perfect for casual users. It has a more than fast enough (not to mention large) hard drive for you to store all that you need, it's not too hard to set up and it's really quite a sturdy machine. The only problem with it is the fact that it has Microsoft Windows 8 on it. For a new user, Windows 8 may prove a bit more than they've bargained for, as it is truly a bit complicated and requires a certain degree of understanding in my opinion.

  • Business User
I normally recommend Ultrabooks for business users as they are easier to carry around. I think the HP g7-2238nr isn't exactly very good for a PROFESSIONAL business user, but it can do for an amateur on a budget. The size of the screen make the laptop a bit heavier to transport and the device itself is lacking a few features that would have been pretty darn great on a regular business laptop. The lack of a Bluetooth is definitely an inconvenience. However, the fact that it has USB v3.0 on it somehow makes up for it. However, with all the speed USB 3.0 offers, it still doesn't fully make up for the hassle of using tons of cables to put a file in your phone.

  • Power User
The average power user laptop should have almost all components, aside from a dedicated video card, at their peak. This particular laptop isn't fit for power users at all, not if they want the slightest shred of performance in their tasks. The exact reason why this HP g7-2238nr isn't fit for a power user is this: its processor and RAM quantity won't suffice. It could have served a power user would the laptop be equipped with more RAM, or the same RAM but with 1860 MHz frequency (a rare sight indeed) and if the laptop had at least a 2nd Gen Intel "i" series processor.

  • Gaming
The gaming laptop should be the apex of laptop technology should be the best sort of device out there. All components, including the dedicated video card, should be the best they could possibly be. Needless to say, the HP Pavilion g7-2238nr isn't fit for gaming at all. The lack of a strong gaming processor is one of the main reasons. See the explanation given to the power user for more details. Also, the lack of a strong dedicated video card is pretty felt. Sure, the integrated one is quite strong in itself, but it cannot serve as well as a dedicated one. The g7-2238nr from HP is not a gaming laptop. If you're a serious gamer you should be able to find better laptops from HP for the same price (under 500 dollars).

PROs Vs. CONs

One of the best things about this laptop is its screen size. Rare is the case ( so rare, that it's almost impossible ) that laptops are equipped with such a large screen for such a small price ( I am referring to the price WITH the discount, not the full one ). Also, the version of Windows on it is very good for users who have a bit of experience with the PC. New users will find it quite difficult to cope with, and for those people I'd recommend a quick and full install of Windows 7.

While the integrated ATI Radeon HD 7520G video card of this laptop is said to go all the way up to 2048 MB, it would still have been much appreciated should the laptop be equipped with a dedicated video card too. I for one truly require a powerful dedicated video card and would feel deeply out of place without one. Also, the preinstalled programs are quite bothersome. While they are good for the casual users with no tech smarts, since it's easier to set up, most of the experienced users have their own particular suite of programs that they use. Also, most of them don't take too kindly to newer ones, especially if they are trials that do nothing besides beg you to purchase the full thing.

User Reviews: what others think?

There are a few user reviews at the moment, and a few are quite worrisome and get you thinking for a bit. While most, no matter how much they praise the laptop, agree that the Windows 8 on it is a big mistake and you should immediately install Windows 7 on it when you get it, there have been a few, let's call them critical, reviews that made me think for a bit.

Certain users that claim they own even Master degrees in IT claim that the computer itself has a few flaws that are hard to detect. Under several stress tests ( or everyday tasks, for that said person ) the laptop seemed to fail and would not run according to its description. However, the same user then went on and said that this problem wasn't only with this particular laptop, but with other HP machines as well. The user then claimed that as reliable HP can be at times, they are making quite a few mistakes with their products lately.

The main idea that I've managed to get from users is that this Windows 8 has been implemented (enforced, actually) way too early for its time and people do not really know how to operate it, I think.

from 4 to 8GB RAM Upgrade for HP Pavilion g7-2238nr

Summary

In conclusion, this laptop is pretty decent as far as hardware is concerned. The price is okay, especially with this large discount it has at the moment (180 dollars discount is quite a bit I'd say). The Pavilion g7-2238nr from HP is pretty good for a few categories, but pretty bad for others. For instance, as a Power User or Gamer, you have no use whatsoever for this laptop. It is useful for Students, Casual Users and Business Users, however.
