Lenovo IdeaPad G510s 15.6-Inch Touchscreen Laptop Review

Today we are taking a look at the Lenovo IdeaPad G510s 15.6-Inch Touchscreen Laptop. The performance of this device alone is enough to justify the price tag of 570 dollars (at moment of writing), but this Lenovo also comes with a Touchscreen. This notebook is part of Lenovos Ideapad value line of devices ensuring that the offered performance levels won’t brake your budget.

The Exterior

The Lenovo IdeaPad G510s 15.6-Inch Touchscreen Laptop is part of Lenovo’s value line of notebooks and this is very obvious on the outside case. The case is finished in black textured plastic. The top cover feature the typical silver Lenovo logo on the upper left corner and the cover itself and the underside of the laptop are finished in basic textured plastic. This finish helps both with scratch avoidance and also makes imperfections less visible.
On the inside the 15.6-Inch Touchscreen is surrounded by a black plastic rim, containing the webcam and integrated microphone centered above the screen and the Lenovo logo in siver underneath it. The Touchscreen supports 10-point multi-touch technology, allowing you to use both hands if you need to. The inner surface comes with a black brushed aluminum layer to make it feel and look better. On the top left corner we find the power button and Lenovo’s One Key Recovery button. Underneath that we find Lenovo’s raised tile style keyboard in black with a numerical pad with the Ctr and Fn keys in the normal order. This keyboard is present on many other Lenovo laptops and we have described it in the past as being a very good keyboard once you get used to its “feel”.
Slightly off-center underneath the keyboard we find the touchpad making it very comfortable to type on this device. Just under the touchpad, on the outer rim we find the status LEDs followed by the 2 built-in speakers located on each side just under the outer rim on the underside. This isn’t a very good location for built-in speakers as they can get easily covered up by clothes or any soft surface the laptop may be sitting on.

The Connectivity

The Lenovo IdeaPad G510s features all the common connectivity options available at the moment.

It features a Kensington lock port, the DVD-RW optical drive, one USB 2.0, a card reader and the Mic/Headphones combo port on the right side. On the left side it comes equipped with the power port, VGA port, Lan port, HDMI port, and 2 USB 3.0 ports.
Further connectivity options include Bluetooth and Wireless WiFi 802.11b/g/n connectivity.

The Performance

The Lenovo IdeaPad G510s comes with a lot of performance for a 15.6-Inch Touchscreen laptop in this price range. It comes equipped with the 4th generation Intel Core i5-4200M running at 2.5 Ghz. With the help of Turbo Boost it can increase its clock rates up to 3.1 Ghz depending on load and needed performance. This processor also comes with the new Intel HD Graphics 4600, making it about 30 % faster than a similarly clocked HD 4000. This means that games that would run on the HD 4000 will run much smoother with better details on this newer card.
To this we have the addition of 6 GB of DDR3 RAM making this a very potent laptop. Multitasking and memory intensive applications won’t pose a problem for this laptop. The additional 1 TB of storage space makes it a device capable of being usable even in a couple of years time.
The battery life is quoted by Lenovo at up to 5 hour of productive time.
The overall performance is average for laptops in this price range but it is above average for a touchscreen enabled laptop. This makes it one of the best touchscreen laptops at the moment.

Who is it for? discussing who would benefit most from this laptop...

  • Student
Lenovo IdeaPad G510s 15.6-Inch Touchscreen laptop makes a very good proposition for students. The performance of the overall package is more than enough, the battery life is average and I think enough for a day at school. The high storage capacity and the basic gaming ability makes it good for rest and relaxation and the very sturdy finish makes it ideal for dorm life where scratches and mishaps are a given. The Touchscreen makes using Windows 8.1 easy.

  • Casual User
This device can be a very good choice for the casual user interested in a long term buy. The large storage capacity, large installed RAM and good processor ensures this device can have a long life in service. It comes with all of todays connectivity options and also has the Touchscreen needed for any requirements to be expected in the near future. It also can help as an introductory device to the new Windows interface. The finish isn't very stylish, but at least it will be very resilient over time.

  • Business User
The overall performance is more than would be expected form a device used for business. It comes with a full sized keyboard, making it easy to work with numbers and the battery life is enough for regular commutes and or downtimes. The overall design might not be for everyones taste, and the fact that it comes with Windows 8.1 may pose a problem for some applications. If you don't have these drawbacks, than this device is a very good choice for business users.

  • Power User
I think the performance of the Lenovo G510s 15.6-Inch Touchscreen laptop speaks for itself. With 6 GB of DDR3 RAM and the 4th Generation Intel Core i5 this is a more than capable device. The Touchscreen in this device might be an extra feature that isn't needed and in case you really don't need it I recommend you look for a different device in the same price range with slightly better overall performance.

  • Gaming
The Lenovo G510s 15.6-Inch Touchscreen laptop is a very capable device for everyday usage. On the gaming front it is limited. The integrated Intel HD 4600 graphics card is obviously better than the previous generation and this makes it capable of running most of todays games on medium to low settings. This is no gaming machine by any means but it is capable of some gaming if needed. In this budget range I would recommend looking for something without a Touchscreen and with a better graphics card.

PROs Vs. CONs

The Lenovo G510s 15.6-Inch Touchscreen laptop is one of those devices that offer a whole lot of performance without braking the bank. It is a very good competitor even to the devices without Touchscreens in this price range. The addition of the Touchscreen makes it one of the best Touchscreen laptops out there.

Considering that we are looking at a device on the upper end of the 550 dollar range I think the basic design doesn't help the Lenovo G510s 15.6-Inch Touchscreen laptop. It makes it look cheap even if the overall package is very good. Although the Intel HD 4600 still is a decent graphics card, at this price range we would expect a dedicated graphics card.

Summary

The Lenovo G510s 15.6-Inch Touchscreen laptop is one of those rare packages that offer everything you need within a restricted budget. You get high performance with tons of storage and a touchscreen on top to boast. That being said, the area that really pulls it down is the overall fit and finish. It is a Lenovo value line product and it shows, but in the past these devices used to look like decent down to earth devices. The textured finish might make the surface very resilient to scratches but I think they over did it with this device and it starts looking cheap. If the design isn't a problem for you, then this is one very good laptop and we highly recommend it.
